VP Technical

Dear Central Ohio ASPE Chapter Members,

Happy Summer ASPE! We hope that everyone is having a wonderful and fun summer. We are in the final stages of finding a new home for our meetings. This will start in January so be on the lookout for the new location.

September’s meeting will be on Keeping the Pressure On: Navigating MedGas 101

Designing medical gas systems can give even the most seasoned designer a bit of "sweaty palms." Between the life-safety implications and the rigid code requirements, it’s a field where there is no messing around. If you’ve ever stared at an NFPA 99 update and wondered if your design was still compliant, this month’s session is for you.

We are excited to welcome Mathis Carlson, the Special Projects and Education Manager at MediTrac and current President of the Medical Gas Professionals Healthcare Organization (MGPHO). Mathis carries multiple ASSE certifications ranging from Installer (6010) to Designer (6060) and Instructor (6050).

He’ll be breaking down MedGas 101, with a specific focus on the critical shifts found in the 2018–2024 editions of NFPA 99. We’ll be looking at how new technologies, like corrugated medical gas tubing, are changing the game for hospital compliance and installation efficiency.

He’ll be guiding us through:

  • NFPA 99 Evolution: Identifying the "must-know" changes from the 2018 through 2024 editions.
  • Innovation in the Walls: How corrugated tubing and newer materials are benefiting facility design and long-term maintenance.
  • Compliance Strategy: Navigating the perspective of verifiers and inspectors to ensure your project passes the first time.
  • System Sizing & Design: Best practices for modern medical gas system architecture.

Send Over Your Technical Headaches

To ensure Mathis addresses the specific challenges we face in the, I’m consolidating a list of questions and "nightmare" scenarios to send him ahead of time. Whether it’s a specific sizing hurdle or a code interpretation that has you stuck please email your questions to me at [email protected].

I want to hear from you! Please direct all technical-program ideas, presentation proposals, and speaker inquiries to me at [email protected]. This is your chapter also, your input is valuable, so please feel free to let me know what you would like to be presented at our meetings. Your input ensures we deliver valuable and relevant content at each monthly meeting. Thank you for your continued support and involvement.
